Kasondra Shaw

Where do you currently live?  Fort Wayne, Indiana

How far along were you when you found out you were expecting twinsWe found out at 10 weeks. A moment I will never forget!

Any issues during your pregnancy?  When the morning sickness finally ended the rest of my pregnancy was wonderful! I loved being pregnant with twins.

Memorable/funny moment when you were pregnant: This wasn't funny at the time but looking back at it now I can laugh about it! During my first trimester I had horrible morning sickness. I threw up around eight times a day and couldn't keep anything down. I could barely function. One morning I had to go pick up my daughter from preschool and had just got done throwing up. I didn't even bother putting shoes on or a bra. Ha. That's how sick I felt! I had sweats and a t-shirt on and that's it. I thought no one would see me since they had a car pool lane at my daughter's school. Well I get there and there is a sign saying that parents will have to go in today to pick up their child because there was a field trip and not enough teachers to help out with the car pool. Seriously!? I couldn't go back home because I was already late so I get out with no shoes on and no bra and I'm wearing sunglasses even though it's rainy and gloomy out. I hurry inside and get my daughter. I don't look at anyone and rush out because I feel myself getting sick again. Fortunately I made it out in time to get behind my car in the grass to get sick. No one knew I was pregnant at the time so I did explain myself later to everyone!

Looking back, what is one thing you would tell your pregnant self?  When I was pregnant with my daughter I didn't take many pregnancy pictures and regretted it. This time around I made sure to take lots of pregnancy pictures. They are so fun to look back on and see how much you grew each week. Pregnancy is just so beautiful and amazing!

How many weeks/days were you when your twins were born? 38 weeks exactly

Did you have a c-section or natural delivery?  I had a scheduled c-section at exactly 38 weeks. I'm pretty sure I could have made it to 40 weeks though because those babies were not budging! I had to have a c-section with my daughter so I had one this time around as well. I had a horrible experience with my daughter so I was really nervous about everything. Dustin waited for me outside the O.R. room while they prepped me. Since I was having twins there were so many people in the room with me. Dustin finally came in and sat next to me. I was having a really difficult time breathing which the anesthesiologist told me was completely normal and that it would get better which it did. Dustin my husband leaned over and kept telling me how proud he was of me and he prayed with me. He really helped calm my nerves and made me feel better. Soon Vera came out screaming and a minute later Jaxon came out crying. Dustin brought me Vera first then Jaxon. They told me Jaxon was having a hard time breathing so they had to take him right to the NICU. Seeing those babies for the first time is a moment I could relive over and over again.

Any NICU time?  If yes, for what reason and how long?  Jaxon spent a week in the NICU due to problems breathing and air pockets in his lungs.

Did you have any complications after delivery? I was in a lot of pain for the first two days but gradually started feeling better.

How long did you stay in the hospital? 4 days

Did your twins stay with you or in the hospital nursery at night? Jaxon was in the NICU the whole time and we had Vera stay in the nursery. They brought her to me every three hours to nurse.

What are three things you are so glad you had (or wish you would have had) at the hospital?

Coconut Oil - Great if you're breastfeeding to put on your nipples and also for pumping.
Chap stick
Lots of snacks

Describe one of your favorite moments while you were at the hospital:  When I finally got to hold Jaxon and nurse him. I had to go a whole day without holding him and it was killing me!

If you had one piece of advice you could give an expecting mom of twins, what would it be? That last month of being pregnant is tough! You're so uncomfortable and just wishing it was over. Instead try to really enjoy that time to yourself, lots of time with your spouse, and other children if you have any. That time will be hard to come by once the babies come.
