Name:
Juliane Thompson

Where do you currently live?  Calgary, Alberta

How far along were you when you found out you were expecting twins8 weeks

Any issues during your pregnancy?
I had a really good pregnancy, up until almost everything seemed to go wrong! I started experiencing pressure and cramping around 21 weeks and thought nothing of it. I finally went to get checked out because something felt "off" and I ended up being in pre-term labour at 22 weeks. I was put on immediate bed rest where I spent the next 6 weeks praying my babies stayed safe inside. I spent 10 days on hospital bed rest and the rest at home. My babies were delivered at 28.1 weeks.

Memorable/funny moment when you were pregnant: My husband finding out we were having twins! He may have had a minor heart attack! The ultrasound tech kept asking if he was going to be okay as he took the news as a shock!! He was saying things like "were screwed!' And- two, that's two of everything" The next day he was excited and nervous and now loves being a twin dad!

Looking back, what is one thing you would tell your pregnant self?  Enjoy every moment! It took me almost losing my babies to realize how lucky I was every day to keep them inside! All the small things that seemed to matter before (stretch marks, the perfect nursery, etc) didn't matter anymore! Twins are miracles everyday and I am so thankful to call myself a mama to my healthy babies!!

How many weeks/days were you when your twins were born? 28 weeks, 1 day

Baby A's Information:
Hadley Grace
September 6, 2013
2 lb 6 oz
35 cm

Baby B's Information:  Parker Lee
Sept 6, 2013
2 lb 5 oz
38 cm

Are your twins identical? No

Did you have a c-section or natural delivery?  I really wanted a natural delivery but about a week before they were born, our little girl turned breech. I labored until 7cm where they performed an emergency c-section.

Any NICU time?  If yes, for what reason and how long?  Our babies were born at 28.1 weeks so we spent a total of 104 days in the NICU. At the time, the days seemed to drag on as we patiently waited to bring them home. Now, looking back, it feels like it never even happened.

Did you have any complications after delivery? I ended up getting an infection in my c-section and was on antibiotics. Then I got Mastitis 3x and had to be admitted to the hospital for IV injections due to the severity of my infection. I had a tough go in the beginning, but I think a lot of it stemed from the fact that I had to pump instead of nurse. I wasn't properly emptying my breasts which caused a lot of issues. Now that I am nursing, I haven't and any issues.

How long did you (the parents) stay in the hospital? I was discharged after 4 days

Did your twins stay with you or the hospital nursery at night? They stayed in the NICU

What are three things you are so glad you had (or wish you would have had) at the hospital?
1. Comfy pants. My incision was really sore and a lot of the pants I brought hit right where my stitches were. I wish I thought that through before packing
2. My pillow! It's a little piece of home that makes you feel more comfortable!
3. Camera!! Thankfully we remembered this one! My sister was able to take a ton of photos of our twin birth and I will forever treasure them!

Describe one of your favorite moments while you were at the hospital:  Getting to hold my babies for the first time!! We were able to do skin to skin with Hadley the day after being born but due to lung complications with Parker we wernt able to hold him for two weeks. The first time was absolutely amazing and something I will never forget!!

If you had one piece of advice you could give an expecting mom of twins, what would it be?  Take each day as it comes! One thing we learned is that your day can change in an instant! From your pregnancy, your birthing experience, NICU and bringing your babies home- each day will bring you new experiences and adventures!!
